Could the procedure used for partial birth abortions be used for capital punishment cases?

Cruel and unusual punishment has been one of the reasons cited by many opponents of capital punishment. Partial birth abortion is supported by many. Why couldn't they use the same procedure on the criminals as they do on the partially born?
