Why in the computer age do we still need elected representatives to vote FOR us?

When the country was formed elected representatives were needed to travel between their districts and the nations capital (or the state capital). This was necessary because the cost/ time to travel was prohibitive. This system is flawed because of the
The only answer I have is the country would be run by pensioners and the unemployed, if every issue was put to a vote..
(which actually may not be a bad thing).
